American Tinning & Galvanizing Company is a third
generation family owned business founded in 1931 by Mr. Fred
Carlson. Begun as a tinning business with one employee,
Mr. Carlson rented a small warehouse space near the corner of
12thand Cherry Streets in Erie, Pennsylvania.
During WWII the company expanded the metal finishing
capabilities to include zinc and cadmium electroplating,
sulfuric and chromic acid anodizing and phosphate and chromate
conversion coatings.
In 1955, a second company, Carlson
Erie Corp., was established to be a fabricator of tanks and
racks for American Tinning & Galvanizing and other shops in
the plating industry. Under the leadership of Carlson's
son-in-law, Jack Scheppner, Carlson Erie thrived and in the
late 70's Mr. Scheppner took the helm of both companies.
American Tinning & Galvanizing Company continued to keep
pace with innovation and technology and has installed an
in-house waste treatment system to provide zero discharge into
the municipal system.
Quality has been a major focus
of the company: American Tinning & Galvanizing recently
earned the prestigious NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense
Contractors Accreditation Program) certification for their
chemical processing systems. In fact, American Tinning &
Galvanizing is the only metal finishing company in the
northwest PA tri-state area to be certified for both anodizing
and electroplating.
Upon Mr. Scheppner's
retirement, the leadership was passed to his daughter,
Kathleen. During her tenure, Ms. Scheppner was the
recipient of numerous business management, community and civic
awards. 2004 brought a transition that included
Kathleen's retirement and the merger of Carlson Erie into
American Tinning & Galvanizing. Today American Tinning &
Galvanizing Company employs over 70 people and occupies 72,000
square feet of production, fabrication and warehouse space on
the same corner as it did 70+ years ago. Jacqueline
"Robin" Scheppner is Vice President and current managing
owner.
