Erie, PA – The Erie City Mission’s “Help the Homeless Week” received a little help from the employees of American Tinning & Galvanizing Company. The company sponsored a food drive in connection with the event and collected over 650 items: canned goods, non-perishable foodstuffs, sundries and new clothes. “The response we get from our employees is overwhelming” stated the Director of Operations, Rodney Chiarelli. “Whenever ATG has an activity to help out the Erie Community the employees of ATG always step up to the plate”, he added.
ATG’s next community function will take place in April in conjunction with the “2011 Great PA Clean Up”. In 2006, the company joined the Penn Dot Adopt-A-Highway program and adopted the 12th Street corridor between Peach Street and Weschler Avenue.
American Tinning & Galvanizing Company was founded in 1931 and provides metal finishing and fabrication services for thousands of customers throughout the Northeast United States.

Erie PA, March 5, 2010 – The Sight Center of Northwest PA was gratified to receive the news that American Tinning & Galvanizing Company (ATG) has committed $ 5,000 towards their 2010 Capital Campaign. The Sight Center’s goal is to raise $ 1.3 million to purchase a new facility to house the organization’s programs and services. The Sight Center was founded in 1938 and is the only private, non-profit group in the Erie area, delivering 13 distinct vision related programs, primarily to low-income individuals and pre-school children.
“The deterioration or loss of sight can be one of the most devastating challenges that any person, young or old, can face. With Erie County having one of the highest per capita rates of blindness in the nation the tragedy of vision loss is a problem of special interest to American Tinning & Galvanizing Company and the local community. ATG is proud to play a part in the Capital Campaign”, stated the Financial & HR Manager, David Bertges.
American Tinning & Galvanizing Company (ATG) was founded in 1931 by Fred Carlson and is a third generation, family owned business specializing in the corrosion control of metal, steel and aluminum by providing “finishing” services.

Erie, PA – Employees of American Tinning & Galvanizing Company enthusiastically rallied around the United Way of Erie County during their Annual Campaign. “60 % of our workforce contributed to this year’s campaign. The employees contribution exceeded over $ 8,000” stated the Financial & HR Manager, David Bertges. “I am really proud of our employees; especially this year when the need is so critical, they came through in grand fashion” declared Vice President Robin Scheppner. “It truly demonstrates their caring for the less fortunate in the community.”

This past year American Tinning & Galvanizing Company started a new program called “Give 8 Get 8”. When an employee volunteers 8 hours of their time to a local non-profit they receive 8 hours of paid time off. Nearly a dozen employees took part in the program in 2009.

American Tinning & Galvanizing Company (ATG) specializes in the corrosion control of metal, steel and aluminum by providing “finishing” services to our customers. The metal finishing processes offered include hot dip galvanizing, zinc electroplating, cadmium electroplating, cold black oxide, and black phosphate. The aluminum finishes include sulfuric acid anodizing, chromic acid anodizing, chromate conversion coatings and, “two step” architectural bronze anodizing.

American Tinning & Galvanizing Company was founded in 1931 by Fred Carlson and is a third generation, family owned business. It was started as a tinning business with one employee and expanded its metal finishing capabilities during WWII. In 1955, Fred & Harry Carlson established Carlson Erie Corporation as a fabricator of tanks and racks for ATG and the plating industry. Carlson’s son-in-law, Jack Scheppner managed Carlson Erie Corporation and in the late 1970’s took over both companies. Upon Mr. Scheppner’s retirement the leadership of the company was passed on to his daughter, Kathleen. In 2004, Kathleen retired and Carlson Erie was merged into American Tinning & Galvanizing Company as its fabrication division. With Kathleen’s retirement, Jacqueline “Robin” Scheppner took the helm as Vice President and managing owner.

Today American Tinning & Galvanizing Company employs over 63 employees, working 24 hours a day, 5½ days a week. The company occupies 72,000 square feet of production, fabrication and warehouse space on the same corner it did over 78 years ago.

Erie, PA – Pennsylvania’s Department of Community & Economic Development Acting Secretary, George Cornelius along with State Senator Jane M. Earll (R-49), will tour American Tinning & Galvanizing Company on Thursday, April 16 from 11am until 12 noon.

David Bertges, Financial & HR Manager extended the invitation to the Secretary and Senator to view the energy saving improvements recently completed at the 78 year old company. “These energy saving initiatives have enabled the company to reduce its electric consumption by approximately 15%. The decrease in electric has made it possible for ATG to effectively reduce its environmental footprint, equal to the removal of 67 cars, or saving 690,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Without low interest funding from the DCED and a grant from the PA DEP this project would not have been possible”, stated Mr. Bertges.

According to Senator Earll, “I thought it was important to showcase this company. American Tinning is a recognized leader in their industry. They’ve been around for a long time and are important to this community. I believe it is meaningful for the Secretary to tour and meet with industry leaders that have the foresight to make investments in energy efficiency that will keep them competitive in the future.”

American Tinning & Galvanizing (ATG) is a family owned business specializing in the corrosion control of metal, steel and aluminum by providing “finishing” services. The company was founded in 1931 by Fred Carlson and is a third generation, family owned business. It was started as a tinning business with one employee and expanded its metal finishing capabilities during WWII. Since 2004 ATG has developed into a prosperous company by becoming more competitive in the marketplace through an expanded menu of services; active pursuit of new customers, and earning Nadcap certification. Today American Tinning & Galvanizing Company employs over 75 employees on the same corner where the business began.

American Tinning & Galvanizing will be presented with the “Celebration of Excellence” Award at the Erie Regional Chamber annual dinner Thursday evening.
